General results

Based on 2,640 claims against orthopaedists resolved by Physician Insurers Association of America, the Professional Liability Committee found 58 percent were settled without indemnity payment; 25 percent were settled with indemnity payment; 8 percent were dismissed by the court; 6 percent went to trial with a defense verdict; 2 percent went to trial with a plaintiff verdict; 0.7% were arbitrated or mediated with indemnity payment; and 0.3 percent were arbitrated or mediated without indemnity payment.
