February 2002 Bulletin

The role played by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) in the development of the arthroscopic knee surgery simulator project was inadvertently omitted from a December 2001 Bulletin article about the Academy’s virtual reality projects. The Academy’s investigative and development effort in virtual reality programs was initiated following a demonstration project undertaken by the ABOS. In this project, the ABOS demonstrated that virtual reality could be applied to teaching techniques in arthroscopic surgery. The Academy’s arthroscopic knee surgery simulator project is based on the work of the ABOS.
