IMCA now available to members

By Sandra Lee Breisch

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons seeks to be the definitive source of information and knowledge on musculoskeletal conditions.

To this end, AAOS has launched an exceptional project called "IMCA," Improving Musculoskeletal Care in America, which includes modules of evidence-based information. They reflect the most significant and current findings from the published literature on specific musculoskeletal conditions.

The Academy is pleased to announce that the first installment of IMCA—a compendium of 37 modules on Osteoarthritis of the Knee—is now available to AAOS members.

The document is extensively researched with 325 citations of scientific articles from 1995 to the present obtained from Medline, the Cochrane Library and numerous evidence-based resources. More than twice this number of sources were reviewed, including articles with meta-analysis that incorporate earlier findings. The quality of each piece of evidence, based on its "level of evidence rating," was considered. The user can quickly find the original literature source for subsequent personal review.

The IMCA modules can:

The 37 modules fall into seven sections:

  1. State of the Condition
  2. Cost and Burden of the Condition
  3. Evidence-based Resources
  4. Research Questions
  5. Treatment Options
  6. AAOS Resources
  7. Joint Replacement

For a free electronic version, AAOS members can go to the AAOS Research and Scientific Affairs’ home page and click on the IMCA project link. Or, they can purchase the product online for $18 by visiting the Educational Resources Catalogue Web site, click on What’s New, or contact Customer Service (800) 626-6726.
