February 1998 Bulletin

HCFA may expand fraud

Look for more action on fraud and abuse in 1998, said Kathy Buto, deputy director of the Health Care Financing Administrationís Center for Health Plans and Providers. She told the Health Law section of the D.C. Bar Association that a comprehensive anti-fraud initiative underway at the agency will look for areas of Medicare that need more focused review or where rules should be changed. She said the review will be fairly "significant." HCFA has set up an internal board of fraud and abuse made up of personnel from the Office of Financial Management, the Center for Health Plans and Providers, the Center for Medicare and State Operations, and the Office of Clinical Standards and Quality.
