Orthopaedics '96, the Academy's sixth annual science writers seminar in New York City in October, captured strong media interest.
Twenty-two writers and editors and three television camera crews
were on hand to cover the event. The media representation ranged
from Associated Press, and the Star-Ledger newspaper, Newark,
N.J.; to Ladies Home Journal and Readers Digest.
The media attention, which included a major story by Jane
Brody in the New York Times, resulted in about 4,000 telephone
calls and 2,300 letters to the Academy in the following two weeks.
Television reporters from WABC-TV, WCBS-TV and Fox News Channel
did seven separate interviews with the presenters at the seminar.
