William W. Tipton Jr., MD, executive vice president of the Academy, has been selected by the Citizen Ambassador Program of People to People International to serve as chairperson of the orthopaedic segment of a surgical symposium in Beijing, China in November.
Formed in 1956 by President Eisenhower under the auspices of the U.S. State Department, the organization was restructured in 1961 as People to People International, a nonpolitical, nonprofit, private-sector entity. Its objective is to strengthen international goodwill through scientific, professional, and technical exchanges between private citizens of different nations.
Each year, the Citizen Ambassador Program conducts conferences and symposia on selected topics in different countries. The 1996 symposia will focus on surgical topics, from general surgery to orthopaedics. Dr. Tipton will be responsible for the orthopaedic surgery topics.
