James D. Heckman, MD, has been named Editor-in-Chief and Chief Executive Officer of the Journal of Bone and Surgery (JBJS).
Dr. Heckman, 1998 president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (Academy), will assume the post Jan. 1, 2000. He succeeds Henry R. Cowell, MD, PhD, who is retiring.
Dr. Heckman currently is professor and chairman, department of orthopaedics, University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. He will remain on the Board of Directors of the Academy and the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
"I am excited about the opportunity to be editor of the leading peer review scientific journal," Dr. Heckman said. "We will be looking at how to preserve the peer review process, but deliver the information in a more contemporary way.
"All journals are threatened today. We want to make sure the knowledge is delivered in a contemporary way and in a way that orthopaedic surgeons learn and acquire information. We want to become even more a primary source of new scientific information for the orthopaedic community."
