October 2002 Bulletin

Other HIPAA deadlines

The date originally set for covered entities to be in compliance with the Transactions and Code Sets (TCS) Rules was October 16, 2002. However, a one-year extension has been granted by the Department of Health and Human Services for medical practices submitting a compliance plan to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services before that date. This was the subject of a broadcast fax to all members that was sent in September 2002.

If you need additional information regarding the TCS compliance extension, see item No. 5 in "Additional Resources"on the following page. Remember, although TCS compliance is deferred by one-year for all covered entities submitting a Compliance Plan by October 16, 2002, you are required to begin testing activities by April 16, 2003.

The compliance date for the Unique Employer Identifier Rule is almost two years away: July 30, 2004.
