2006 CME course schedule announced

By Kathleen Misovic

Are you thinking about your continuing education needs for next year? The CME Courses Committee has released the 2006 CME course calendar, which features 30 education courses on cutting edge topics and new technology.

“Our commitment to lifelong learning enables us to provide our patients with unparalleled musculoskeletal care,” said Edward Akelman, MD, chair of the CME Courses Committee. “Our obligation to our patients—to keep up with medical technology and knowledge—requires our valuable time.”

Several of the 2006 courses address issues that members consider important. “The programs are timely and focused on the educational gaps that members have identified,” Dr. Akelman said.

Highlights of the course schedule include CME programs on hip and knee arthroplasty, pediatrics, sports medicine and trauma that provide access to special industry “satellite” educational sessions. The schedule also features convenient 1- to 1- day programs focusing on rotator cuff tears and spinal deformity.

Some of the courses are jointly sponsored with specialty societies, including the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA).

The 2006 CME course calendar will include 13 surgical skills programs held at the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Rosemont, Ill., and 16 didactic programs held at sites across the country. Courses to prepare for primary certification are available, as well as courses for recertification.

The AAOS, in cooperation with KarenZupco & Associates, also presents reimbursement and coding workshops at locations throughout the United States. The reimbursement workshop—Reimbursement Strategies and Tactics for Orthopaedists—features new information on multi-level appeal strategies and an overview of Medicare’s new National Provider Identifier. The workshop is suitable for physicians, administrators, practice managers and billing supervisors.

The coding workshop—Mastering Orthopaedic Coding— will offer information on the new 2006 CPT codes and changes, and a Medicare update. The workshops are suitable for orthopaedic surgeons, administrators, practice managers, billing supervisors, coders, billing team members and surgery schedulers.

Dr. Akelman said the committee is grateful to the more than 1,000 Academy members who volunteered to participate in these CME programs as course directors and faculty preparing individualized educational experiences. It is also grateful to the numerous industry partners who provided equipment and personnel to support the surgical skills courses, as well as unrestricted educational grants in support of the courses. The committee uses these grant funds to offer a lower member and resident/fellow tuition fee for many courses.
